The process has begun, I have made contact with an old acquaintance who has now put me in touch with a breeder of the beautiful Satin Rabbit, and I will be paying her a visit on Saturday.
I had been thinking about entering back into the world of rabbit breeding and showing for a while now, but I wanted to ensure that I had the time to dedicate to the hobby. You see I kept and showed rabbits in the 80's when my kids were small and I didn't have a full time job, but gave up when I returned to a full time career in retail in the mid 90's.
I was quite successful and loved every aspect of the hobby especially the breeding, the selection process and the record keeping, building up a strain that I could call my own. I started like so many other people getting into the hobby with just 2 types, a fancy rabbit which was the Dutch and then the fur rabbit which was the Satin, but after entering and visiting shows this ballooned into more types, Polish, Tan's, Sables, Ermine Rex, Dwarfs, Silver Fox far to many for a beginner to cope with! Eventually I saw sense and started to specialise in Ivory Satins, and Sables and of course the odd Dutch for sentimental reasons.
Showing rabbits was great fun, meeting so many different people from all walks of life and all over the country. I did miss this! Now having re subscribed to the Fur & Feather magazine once again I see the familiar names from way back who have stayed dedicated to their hobby for many many years. Along with the old names there are many many new ones who I have yet to have the pleasure of meeting.
My husband is going to be busy once again! I have ordered him to make ready hutches in the old pigeon loft, now my rabbitory, and I will need carrying boxes for the shows, all to be this years Christmas present from him, well every year he struggles to rack his brains what to get me, so he should be thankful lol.
Bradford Show - 30/31st January 2010 in Harrogate, this is the show for me, the one I came close to wining many years ago but due to an error on my part (not duplicating the entries) I missed out!! wont be making that mistake again. No showing this year just a visit to get the buzz and check out whats new in the fancy. Gives me a weekend away too Yippee! and who knows what the future may hold!!
My journal will take you with me through my hobbies and interests which I warn you are numerous.I live on a smallholding and grow my own vegetables and fruit, we keep chickens, ducks, geese and bees, but my passion is to show and breed rabbits. I also love to bake and make jams and chutneys, I am also a very keen crafter and dip in and out of many crafts, I did say numerous didn't I?
